Seismology and Geophysics

FUNCTIONS

The Directorate is responsible for conducting seismic refraction, resistivity, airborne surveys, and ground magnetic surveys for geoscientific studies including mineral exploration, and conduct other ground surveys for the preparation of relevant reports to assist with national development. It is also involved in monitoring earthquakes, installation, and maintenance of early warning systems.

The Directorate also conducts seismic hazard assessment and engineering seismological studies (Ambient noise measurement to determine H/V spectral ratio (HVSR)), geo-hazards mapping/risk assessment, characterization of earthquake faults for the preparation of relevant maps and reports to assist with national development, disaster risk reduction, education and sensitization campaign on earthquake as well as conducting early warning and evacuation drill exercises.
